La Romita School of Art Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

La Romita School of Art was established in 1966 by Enza and Paola Quargnali and now in its 50th year of successful operation providing inspiration to thousands of artists around the world we want to take a moment to celebrate what was accomplished and what are the plans for the future. We decided to ask Enza a few questions:

What was your inspiration to start La Romita School of Art?

Italy has always been a mecca for artists who come to visit the historical monuments but many visitors focus only on the well known cities like Rome, Florence, Naples, and Venice. I felt that painters trying to capture the flavor of Italy would be better served by painting the hill towns in Umbria that are replete with centuries of architecture, art history, and beautiful landscapes. Since our family owned a large property on the outskirts of Terni, we felt that this would serve as an excellent base and a refuge for artists coming to Italy to paint.

What are some of the greatest accomplishments of the School?

The greatest accomplishment of the school is that we have served painters, poets, writers, photographers, religious pilgrims, and art lovers for over 50 years helping them fulfill their dreams of visiting Italy and sharing their experiences with many others through their work. The participants have created new long-lasting friendships with like-minded souls.

Why do you think that participants frequently come back to La Romita different years?

Umbria continues to inspire further exploration. Our visitors appreciate the camaraderie they find at La Romita and the peace of staying in one location while exploring numerous hill towns around Umbria.

What are the plans for La Romita moving forward?

We have started to expand the school to include other cultural programming like creative writing, cooking, and photography. We would like to expand these programs while at the same time continuing to offer a variety of painting workshops.
