Scenes, Details, Place, and Atmosphere
with Kay Russell
Kay Russell is a tenured professor at City College of San Francisco. She has specialized in watercolor for over 20 years and has led painting tours to many parts of the world. Her paintings are predominantly watercolor and gouache augmented with elements of mixed media and often contain multiple frames. Collectively they offer a poetic weave of scenes and details about place, distance, atmosphere, and personal feelings of attachment. The paintings attempt to capture not just a scene, but also the spirit of the environment and the atmosphere and poetry of the moment.
This workshop will start with quick sketching techniques emphasizing composition, and then move into landscape painting with atmospheric and linear perspective, painting foliage, mixing greens, and creating texture. Hopefully, by the end, we will create prepared surfaces and work on toned paper. The focus of the workshop is not to learn to paint like Kay, but rather gain the knowledge and power to feel confident about YOUR PAINTINGS.
