Banners to Book

with Kelly Larson and Gina Alvarez

Picture yourself on a hilltop twirling! What would you make as a result? The whirling dervish in you is demanding you spend two weeks with us exploring the ever-changing form of book and print. We will explore the fascinating process of printmaking and other surface techniques both on paper and on cloth. Our focus will be on combining processes like, cyanotype, monoprint, drypoint, marbling, bookmaking, stitching, ink drawing and much more. This is an experimental class designed to familiarize participants with the potential of mixed media surfaces, alternative print structures and potential sculptural investigations.

During this workshop, a typical day will consist of warm up exercises in drawing and mark making, time in the printmaking studio translating ideas and concepts into works on cloth and paper as well as time spent outdoors utilizing natural materials to inform your imagery. We will take several excursions throughout Umbria that will focus on image making, visiting artisans that utilize the techniques we will be exploring…  and of course twirling on a mountain top!

Our goals for you are to explore techniques familiar and new, bring home completed works investigating the concepts of Banners and Books and without a doubt return with amazing work!

We believe strongly in the capacity of our hands as makers and the potential influence we have on mark-making, while harnessing the inherent whimsy present in all of the our techniques. We are looking forward to sharing this philosophy with you in an amazing setting full of color, inspiration, texture and FOOD!!!!! (and wine).
