Painting the Impressionist Landscape (2018)

with Lois Griffel

front-ss3

We have been given a gift: the desire to create. In Painting the Impressionist Landscape, Lois will teach you how to think like a painter and to develop an understanding of technique with an impressionist approach to color. She will give you the tools for continued self-teaching that will encourage your artistic independence.

This workshop will employ techniques described in Lois’ two books, Painting the Impressionist Landscape and Painting Impressionist Color.  In writing the books, Lois developed charts and visuals that help students understand the basics very quickly and apply the lessons immediately.  Although the emphasis is on Impressionist color, she covers many other elements of successful painting, such as design and composition.

Lois teaches mostly in oil, but has had many successful artists using pastels and acrylics. She only asks that artists have experience with acrylics before using them.

I have had two great passions in my life: painting and friends. The act of creating is exhilarating! I enjoy the challenge of facing a blank canvas, but I also enjoy spending time with people. Sharing my love of painting with my students combines two important essentials in my life.[…] I learn as much from you, my students, as (I hope) you are learning from me.  It is a wonderful give and take.

With all of the ancient architecture and natural beauty of Umbria, I hope that our paintings serve as a reminder that nature is precious and fleeting and we must do everything in our power to preserve it!

About Lois

Lois Griffel Lois Griffel’s paintings have won awards throughout the United States. Last year she had the honor of becoming a Master Artist of the American Impressionist Society. This allows her to be one of only a small handful of artists that may add AISM to her signature.

Lois studied painting and portraiture at the Art Student’s League in NYC  with such notables as Ray Kinstler, Harvey Dinnerstein, and others.  She moved to Provincetown spending 10 summers painting portraits while studying with Henry Hensche, an Impressionist artist and director of the renowned Cape Cod School of Art.  At Hensche’s retirement, she became the third director of the school.

Lois developed lessons on the color theory which were included in her book,  Painting the Impressionist Landscape.  Published by Watson-Guptill Publications in 1994,  it has sold over 40,000 copies, and has been translated into Chinese and other languages.  It is considered an art instruction classic and is a primary source for learning Impressionist technique. She recently finished her second book,  Painting Impressionist Color and has produced three teaching DVD’s. She has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine, The Boston Globe, American Art Review and the New York Times and was a cover artist twice for American Artist Magazine.

Lois moved to Arizona 11 years ago and is still pinching herself that she lives there. She adores the landscape, the light, and the people. Best of all, it reminds her of Italy!

Her mission is to share her love of light and color with her students and  painting enthusiasts.
